Miss Chinese Sweetheart

Inspired by the music I listen to, Miss Chinese Sweetheart explores the cultural contrasts in beauty standards between my ethnicity and those of the United States. Overwhelmed by American life and aesthetics, I find myself stressing over conforming to the features of women who embody the archetypal American beauty: fair-skinned, blonde, and evoking the quintessential “girl next door” image. Immersed in this dysphoric experience, I began to contemplate the representation of Miss China in contrast to the archetype of Miss America. In a world where I may not fit the mold of an American sweetheart, I embrace the identity of a Chinese sweetheart.
